A national initiative to promote equestrian sport and encourage people to start riding has been launched, thanks to the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), with support from the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) and Sport England.

A team of mechanical horses – "RoboCob", "Trigger" and "Queenie", named in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – will embark on a nationwide tour of shopping centres, high street department stores, holiday parks, leisure events, universities and colleges.

"Take up the Reins is a tremendous Olympic legacy and it comes at a time when rider numbers are in slight decline," says BETA executive director Claire Williams. "The well-publicised preparations for London 2012, as well as the event itself, are set to highlight the fantastic opportunities available in equestrianism and whet the public’s appetite for riding.

"This is something we can really build on as we get out there and spread the message that horse sport is for everyone, it’s great fun, it’s healthy, you’re never too old and it’s something you can enjoy with friends and family – or on your own in the great outdoors!"

The Take up the Reins tour will be supported by equestrian centres and riding schools throughout England. Trainers will be on hand to ensure that everything runs smoothly and all who take part will be presented with a certificate and rosette to mark the occasion, along with a goody bag and discount vouchers to redeem against their first riding lesson
