UK’s first Heavy Horse Festival set for 2013

The UK’s first Festival of the Heavy Horse takes place next year at Milfield in Northumberland on 5 May 2013.

The festival will celebrate rare breeds such as the Clydesdale, Suffolk Punch, Shires and Percherons.

Funding has been made possible thanks to the Lottery Fund’s Village SOS competition which approved a grant of £29,700.

Viv Cockburn of Milfield Heavy Horse Association (MHHA) said: "We aim to develop an annual festival centered on the heavy working horse along with old working skills and practices."

"The festival will be marketed to attract visitors from all over the UK therefore developing awareness countrywide of the village and promoting a long term benefit of tourism."

The festival will include carriage driving, riding, farriers, saddlers, wheel wrights, vintage machinery and a farmers’ market square with fresh produce.
