Thomas, one of the oldest horses in the Household Cavalry, who served on numerous State occasions, including the Royal Wedding and London 2012 Olympics, has retired.

Twenty-two-year-old Thomas, whose 19-year service in the Life Guards squad as a "Cavalry Black" also featured in the regiments book "Uniquely British", which was published earlier this year to help raise funds for the Household Cavalry Foundation.

Thomas will be retired to Berkshire with Michael Woods, a serving member of the Household Cavalry and farrier, who forged a strong bond with the former ceremonial horse over the years.

Uniquely British: A year in the life of the Household Cavalry, is published by Tricorn Books www.tricornbooks.co.uk, price £29.95.
