A new book Re-Educating Racehorses – A Life After Racing, by Fred Cook and Rowena Simmonds aims to give owners of ex-racehorses a helping hand to getting the most from their horses.

This comprehensive guide to care, management and, training is written by Thoroughbred experts Fred and Rowena, consultants for the Retraining of Racehorses charity (RoR), who also run a yard in Cambridgeshire dedicated to the retraining, re-schooling and re-educating of ex-racehorses.

The book features useful tips including how to manage a horse out of training, the physical stresses of racing on a horse, and how to work the horse from the ground, as well as tack fitting and day to day care.

"We are well aware that in some quarters there is still a degree of stigma attached to ex-racehorses and we see this book as a way to redress the balance," says Rowena. "We are not suggesting that the ex-racehorse is right for everybody, but we do believe and have evidence that in the correct hands, ex-racehorses can make exceptional riding horses that can go on to achieve great things in numerous different equestrian sports. Through the correct management and training, ex-racehorses can make great riding horses, but they aren’t cheap options and there is no quick fix.

"We are careful not to sugar coat anything in this book, as we wanted it to be a useful, practical, no-nonsense guide, not something that gets bought and doesn’t get read," says Fred.

Re-Educating Racehorses – A Life After Racing is available online. RRP £18.99.
