An evening at the Gaucho International Polo
Cambridge versus Oxford

What do you get if you put 86 horses, 16 players and 7500 spectators in the O2 arena? You get the adrenaline fuelled, fast and furious Gaucho International Polo Tournament. The top polo players from around the world came to battle it out in front of a huge audience, in what was a spectacular and very close fought set of matches.

Forget the boat race, the new annual Cambridge versus Oxford University polo match offers much more action and excitement. The match was close throughout but by half time Cambridge were in the lead by two goals. In the third Chukka it all kicked off with one of the Cambridge players taking a fall from his horse and ending up with a split lip after a confrontation with an Oxford player. In the end Oxford were unable to claim back the half time advantage and the match finished with Oxford on a score of 10 and Cambridge on 13.

The first international match kicked off with South Africa versus Scotland and the pace of this match was breath taking. Six horses galloping up and down the pitch in close contact with each other was bound to result in an action filled and aggressive match. The match was neck and neck the whole way through and with one fall off and a dislocated shoulder, it wasn’t without aggression or excitement. In the end it literally came down to the final Chukka with Scotland scoring two goals in the space of a couple of seconds to win the match.

The England versus Argentina match was always going to prove tough for the visiting team due to the huge support from the home crowd. The match was extremely fast paced and it was clear that both teams were desperate to win. The advantage alternated between teams and it was in the last 30 seconds of the match that England scored the winning goal, much to the delight of the 7500 spectators. The final score was England 17, Argentina 16.

The Gaucho International Polo was a fantastic and exciting introduction to arena polo and within minutes you found yourself caught up in the action and cheering for your team. Definitely a date for the diary next year. For more of our pictures check out our photo gallery
