Actor Martin Clunes, who has recently been named as the new president of the Longines Royal International Horse Show, is to present a new documentary series called Horsepower for ITV.

The series investigates the secret of man’s partnership with horses and follows Martin’s journey all over the world, from remotest Mongolia to the deserts of Arabia, and from the glamour of racing in Dubai to the stately ceremony of the State Opening of Parliament.

Martin, who has ridden since he was a child and keeps horses at his Dorset farm, is married to television producer Philippa Braithwaite. Their daughter, Emily, 10, rides and has her own pony and Martin owns a Hanoverian called Chester. His production company, Buffalo Pictures, owns a Thoroughbred racehorse Buffalo Stampede.

"I wanted to find out how this animal became so important to us. How did we manage to tame such a huge, fearful prey animal and make it both our servant and our friend," he says.
