McCoy is bookies favourite!
Leading champion jockey AP McCoy is among the front runners for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which takes place on at the LG Arena in Birmingham on Sunday 19 December.
The only jockey in history to win 15 consecutive champion jockey titles in a row, the 2010 Grand National winner also has the backing of the British Equestrian Federation.
Andrew Finding said: "It is important that we work in harmony with racing and as an industry for
our collective good. It is not very well known by many in our part of the industry but racing puts a great deal of money into the disease surveillance systems that the Animal Health Trust run for us all. We make a contribution to these costs but it is nothing like the amount that racing provides. In my mind, success for racing and for AP, is a success for us all. AP is a quite extraordinary athlete and horseman who I believe we should support as leaders in the sport and recreational horse world. "
McCoy started working with horses at the age of 13, and this became a full time job after leaving school at 15..
In his first season as a Jump jockey, McCoy rode 74 horses to victory.
Since his first race ride in 1990, he has suffered a number of injuries, including broken middle and lower vertebrae, both shoulder blades, both collarbones, ribs, ankle, cheekbones, wrist, ankle and leg plus a dislocated thumb and chipped teeth.
