There was scarcely a dry eye in the house when Robert Walker and Jill Day’s middleweight Pride And Joy were called forward to take the TopSpec hunter title on the opening showing day at HOYS.
The man from Cheshire battled back from serious illness that left him in a wheelchair and his one ambition was to partner the lovely gelding here. Their performance was a triumph and left even their beaten rivals applauding as Robert came down the centre line on his lap of honour.
The showing championships began with miniature horses and the title went to Maxine Foulkes’ seven-year-old gelding Zealshouse Black Jack.
Black was also the colour in the Mace Group Mountain and Moorland championship, where a fabulous display from Sarah Challinor and the lovely little Dartmoor stallion Pumphill Buckthorn was too good for all their bigger rivals.
