The National Equine Database (NED) has got together with the Horsewatch Alliance to introduce a facility for online reporting of stolen horses. Owners are also able to input freezemark and microchip details and the website now has a passport facility, enabling prospective purchasers to check before buying a horse.
Jan Rogers, NED marketing manager, said: "The team has had calls from distraught owners after horses have been stolen or gone missing on loan and in some cases a new passport has been issued. Since NED is the only central place to find UK horse passport information, it’s logical to allow people to check before they buy."
