Find out more about H Tobago , the stunning pure-bred Arab who’s sired a string of international, national and regional show champions

Owned by Kate Fox, stunning stallion H Tobago is a 15.2hh pure-bred Arab who’s licensed with the Arab Horse Society. He was bred by Claire and George Chillingworth at Hartford Arabians, and is by the US-bred sire Psytadel, who stands in Belgium, out of a mare by the imported Russian Arab sire Gonorar – so he’s UK-bred with an international twistl! Tobago stands at the Cliveden Stud.

H Tobago is an international in-hand show champion and sire of many international, national and regional show champions. His Arab show champions are too numerous to list, but highlights include four British national champions, two international C show champions, an international A show double gold medallist, and many regional and county show champions. He won the Sire Produce award at the Arab Horse Society National Championships.

He is now also siring national top-scoring Elite Premium youngstock at the BEF Futurities. But the big highlight for owner Kate came last year when he sired the national joint highest-scoring eventing foal at the 2012 BEF Futurities.

This Anglo Arab foal gained a very impressive Elite score of 9.18 – the highest score across all ages and disciplines at his Futurity. "Elite Premiums are only awarded to youngstock with the potential to succeed at international level, so it’s exciting to think that my little show-Arab has sired a potential international eventer… perhaps the next Tamarillo?!" says Kate.

Sadly, Tobago injured his sternum in a freak stable accident, which put an early end to his ridden training. His trainer, the former international event rider and BE Accredited Trainer Tessa Spencer, says that he was showing tremendous promise, so it’s hoped he’ll be able to resume training under saddle at some stage. However, his oldest offspring are now being started under saddle, so they will be out representing him very soon.

"Tobago is like Thai chili sauce: hot but sweet!" says Kate. "He is the liveliest, happiest, most playful horse you could ever meet – he spends all his time racing around and doing acrobatic circus tricks with his beloved horseball. He keeps himself very fit, and keeps everyone entertained with his daft antics. He’s a big noisy show-off, insatiably curious, but also very sweet and affectionate – loves people, loves fuss and attention.

"Tobago has produced excellent stock from a wide range of mares, from show Arabs and ponies to big warmblood, TB and TB x ID sport horses.

"All the breeders have been delighted with their foals: they almost all come back for repeat breedings, which is surely the highest compliment any breeder can pay a stallion! So I think it’s safe to say that he suits most types and breeds. But he has become especially popular with eventing and dressage breeders.

"I am new to the sport horse breeding world, but the far more experienced and expert sport breeders who are using Tobago tell me that they chose him as an ideal ‘refining’ stallion for Warmblood, ISH and TB mares," adds Kate. "He adds a lot of quality, light, springy movement, speed and cat-like agility, balance, quick-thinking intelligence; athleticism and the famous Arab qualities of inherent soundness and stamina. He is only 15.2, but he consistently sires much bigger offspring, even from small mares – another plus for sport breeders.

Tobago himself has only competed as an in-hand show horse, but breeders are using him to produce eventers, dressage horses, endurance horses – and even for driving and Western disciplines.

He is siring not only proven international show horses, but also Elite-graded potential international eventers and endurance horses.
