Expert advice on choosing a broodmare

Expert advice from Horse Deals’ vet Ed Lyall MRCVS on what makes the perfect broodmare

DO:

- consider temperament – there’s no point in breeding foals which will prove unrideable

- try to choose a mare with good feet and correct hock angles, plus correct length of neck and back

- choose a stallion to complement some of the mare’s less desirable qualities

- try to choose a mare with a good competition record

- consider embryo transfer as an option

DON’T

- breed from a mare less than two years old

- breed from mares with inheritable defects

- breed from mares with obvious conformational problems, which might be passed on to their foal

- choose a mare that is physically immature

- ignore the risk of waiting too long — mare fertility starts to drop after the mid-teens
