Top Broodmare : Kings Temptress

Many of the world’s top breeders are adamant that the mare is more vital to the production of a top-class foal than the sire — and who are we to argue?

As well as her genetic input, every broodmare will imprint characteristics on her foal such as behaviour and temperament and if she has also performed at top level, the chances are that the foal could inherit her agility, scope or movement.

Name: Kings Temptress

Born: 2000

Breed: Part-Thoroughbred

Breeding: by Primitive Rising out of a Louella Inschalla II mare

When Mary King took the first two places in the five-star Rolex Kentucky event, the result was made even sweeter because her winning ride, Derek Baden’s Kings Temptress, is a second-generation home-bred mare.

The daughter of the late great Thoroughbred sire Primitive Rising carries prized Louella Stud bloodlines on both sides, as her dam, King’s Mistress, is by the British Hanoverian Louella Inschallah II, who sired top performers in every discipline.

King’s Mistress inherited plenty of talent, as she won two of her three novice events before retiring to the paddocks, where she has also proved her worth, As well as Kings Temptress, her successful progeny include two more international performers in Kings Fancy and Kings Gem — both by Rock King — and Kings Command, a full-brother to Kings Temptress who competed to one-star level with Charlotte Martin and is now ridden by Ross Morton.

Kings Temptress proved talented from the start and after being brought on slowly by Mary, contested her first intermediate at Wilton as a six-year-old. She moved up to two-star level the following year, where highlights included a fifth place at Le Lion d’Angers, joining the "big boys" the following season at Belton.

As with Mary’s other mares, Kings Temptress has also produced progeny. Keeping it in the family, her seven-year-old son King Casper, now renamed Everys King, is competing with Mary’s daughter Emily in under-18 and novice classes. Everys King also carries classic eventing bloodlines on his sire’s side, as he is by Med Night Mahout, a son of Jumbo.

An exciting future prospect out of Kings Temptress is her yearling colt by another top performer, Chilli Morning. Without a doubt, the King family has plenty to look forward to and plenty of stock that should keep Mary among Britain’s top breeders of successful eventers.
