Stallion Profile : Take It 2 The Limit

We meet the advanced eventing stallion Take It 2 The Limit.

Originally named Principal’s Motto, the French-bred Take It 2 The Limit was handpicked by Olympic eventing gold-medallist Leslie Law in 2004 after Hartpury College decided to invest in a top quality stallion to promote its Home Farm Stud.

Leslie, who trained and competed Take It 2 The Limit in 2005 — being placed fourth in the final of the Winergy Burghley Young Event Horse and third in the PAVO British Breeding Championships — was charged with finding a talented young horse with potential to reach advanced level.

He said at the time: "He’s one of the nicest youngsters I’ve ever had. His jump is to die for and he has the right paces and attitude to go with it."

When Leslie relocated to USA, Jeanette Brakewell took over and established a successful partnership — having stepped up to advanced level, the combination ended the 2009 season with 209 BE points. Highlights have included placings at Tattersalls two-star, Boekelo CCI***, Aston-Le-Walls and the Mitsubishi Motors Hartpury Horse Trials CIC3*.

Temperament and TrainingTake It 2 The Limit, or "Jerry", as he is known at home, is based with Jeanette most of the year.

"He’s a very clever horse who knows which job he’s supposed to do at Jeanette’s yard and at home at stud," says Hartpury’s stud manager Lotta Sortoft. "He focuses better on training at Jeanette’s as he gets very enthusiastic about mares during the breeding season. He really likes ladies [equine], so he’s true to his French origins!

"I don’t think there’s anything he dislikes bar having his mane and tail pulled — and who can blame him!"

Jerry’s rider is a big fan, too.

"He’s very consistent in all three phases due to his level temperament," says Jeanette. "He alternates between hacking, schooling, lungeing and jumping and between times he’s a good sleeper! He can be a bit ‘fruity’ at his first couple of events, then settles into his routine. He’s what it says on the tin! He’s very kind and chilled — unless you walk a lady past his door — and is fantastic to deal with."

Breeding and Progeny

Take It 2 The Limit is available during the breeding season for a limited time.

"He’s first and foremost a competition horse and will take up full stud duties after his career," explains Lotta, who believes Jerry is equally good at producing show jumpers.

"As he competes during the breeding season, he’s had a limited number of mares. We have three different mares who’ve had three foals each by him, and one who’s had two. What strikes me is that they all — regardless of dam — are bold, forward and positive, with a very good attitude to loose jumping and brilliant technique.

"The toughness from the Selle Francais combined with a relatively high Thoroughbred percentage are qualities needed for the modern eventing horse. Take It 2 The Limit also has a very good trot, which is equally important for the dressage phase. So far, his very best progeny are out of daughters of Puissance, Concorde and Krisinsky, so he seems to work well with a variety of bloodlines."

Take It 2 The Limit sired the best three-year-old show jumper in the 2010 BEF Futurity series in Hartpury Sky Is The Limit. In 2009, the potential eventer Hartpury Top Gun scored 9.5 for athleticism, while his daughter Hartpury Milady was the highest scoring two-year-old eventer at her venue and has been consistently placed in-hand with her new owner. From his small first crop in 2006, five foals are registered of which two qualified for the British Eventing four-year-old championship.

"He’ll continue his competitive career this year, with his main goal Luhmühlen CCI4*," says Lotta. " And at the end of his career he’ll make a fantastic schoolmaster for our students as well as performing his stud duties."
