The news was announced at Aachen CDIO this week where this combination was due to compete, but after showing initial signs of recovery, the 27-year-old rider suffered a relapse.
A disappointed Mathias said: “It was my big dream to compete for Germany at the Olympic Games with this unique horse Totilas and together with this fantastic young team. It would, however, be irresponsible of me, both in terms of my own health and towards my team colleagues, if I were to be nominated in my present state of health. We are really sorry for the many fans of Totilas that he will not be able to participate at the Olympic Games. I am of course bitterly disappointed and sad.”
Dr Manfred Giensch, the German team doctor, explained: "The results of today’s blood test mean that he must refrain from any physical exertion in the foreseeable future. Training for the Olympic Games and a possible participation in London would involve a huge risk to his health."
