Royal Windsor Horse Show 11th - 15th May 2011
BY: Horse Deals
Royal Windsor’s 68th Horse Show runs from 11-15th May this year, signalling the start of the outdoor Show season for many competitors.
The only annual event that allows visitors access to Her Majesty The Queen’s private grounds, the Show has grown significantly over the years and now has an average of 3000 horses and ponies taking part in over 150 classes.
Royal Windsor Horse Show attracts riders of all ages and disciplines, from Team GBR competitors to grass roots riders who have qualified through the RWHS British Riding Clubs Championships. You may see Michael Whitaker jumping the huge fences in the Castle Arena, while at the side of another arena will be throes of family and friends cheering on their loved ones in junior novice show jumping and dressage competitions!
An addition to the jumping classes at Windsor this year is The Land Rover Six Bar, held in The Castle Arena on Saturday afternoon. But as well as show jumping, Royal Windsor is a showing fan’s delight. There are over 100 showing classes for all types of horse and pony, as well as the Horse Deals sponsored class – The Amateur Hunter Championship in the Castle Arena on Thursday afternoon.
There’s also the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix, which starts on Thursday and runs through to a thrilling climax on Sunday afternoon. If you’ve never really watched carriage driving trials before, make some time for it at Windsor. On Saturday, the competition reaches its peak with the Marathon phase – where competitors have to tackle various obstacles throughout the showground, including the famous water obstacle - where you might even spot His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, doing a spot of time-keeping!
Royal Windsor Horse Show is also home to hundreds of tradestands. The newly revitalised area, now called Windsor Food & Shopping Festival, contains more than 200 shops where you can find everything from horsewear, to jewellery and crafts as well as a fantastic food and drink festival. Brand new this year is a bandstand showcasing local musical talent and the World Food Tent where you can sample food from around the world.
On the evenings of the Horse Show, and now in its fourth year is The Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo. This outstanding evening of military entertainment is a not-for-profit event supporting the Royal British Legion and raising funds to help soldiers and their dependants, who have served in operations such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
This year’s Tattoo has a British-French theme and will include a special Joint Musical Ride by The Household Cavalry and their French counterparts, La Garde Republicaine. This exclusive joint performance has never seen before and is sure to be a really thrilling equestrian spectacle.Ticket information
