Buying at Auction - Essential advice

Print this page

Can you pick up your next eventing superstar at a British auction? Make sure you follow these essential top tips to make your next visit a success:

- Before you even think of heading off to auction, it's vital you do your homework.

- Go through the catalogue prior to the event and highlight horses you're interested in.

- Research your choices thoroughly and find out as much about them as you can. If possible, consider viewing the horse before the auction. This will give you the chance to try them out and ask all the important questions.

- Ask lots of questions and, if you have not viewed the horse beforehand, make sure you see the horse ridden or trotted up in hand.

- Finally, it is important that you understand the auction house rules, conditions of sale and the vetting options available, so it is worth going to a few auctions before you go to buy, just to see the process first hand.
